Hyphen Numbers Confusion

  • labing-isa vs labing isa
  • dalawampu’t isa vs dalawampu’t-isa

In English grammar rule, it is stated that we must use hyphens (-) when we are writing compound numbers from 21-99. Meanwhile in Filipino, there is no specific rule mentioned in using hyphens in numbers. So, in this post, we used the English rule on numbers. But, in the Tagalog grammar book, I’ve read, they do not use hyphens in compound numbers (21-99). In Filipino, we must add a conjunction “at” (and) when we are constructing a compound number. We can write this conjunction as ” ‘t ” followed by the added number to become easier for us to pronounce and write it.

Example:

  • Twenty-one – dalawampu at isa
    • Instead of writing dalawampu at isa, it is better to write “dalamwapu’t isa” in our sentence.

But, there are also Filipino numbers that we must use hyphens like number eleven (11), labing-isa, because consonant letter G is followed by vowel letter I.
